Hilde Overbergh

“Everything we see hides another thing, we always want to see what is hidden by what we see. There is an interest in that which is hidden and which the visible does not show us. This interest can take the form of a quite intense feeling, a sort of conflict, one might say, between the visible that is hidden and the visible that is present.” - René Magritte

Inspired by inclusive quiet rooms and Kurt Schwitters' iconic work Merzbau, Hilde Overbergh creates a room-filling installation that transforms the ground-floor entrance into a serene though not too serious haven for contemplation. Mousse shapes, insulating materials and screen prints placed on and over one another form a dynamic, sculptural environment that invites exploration. Images of moss and light projections through textured green glass surfaces add an organic, almost ethereal quality, creating a tension between the natural and the artificial, the quiet and the lively. The work is a spatial collage to disappear into or wander through, briefly becoming part of it, as an element among the other elements.

HILDE OVERBERGH
(°1964, Belgium)

Using primarily reclaimed materials, Overbergh creates paintings and installations that carry the traces of a tactile and intuitive process. Her works emerge from an ongoing dialogue in which energy is exchanged, materials recharged and contexts transformed. The play with gravity is a common thread throughout her practice and reflects a balancing act between control and letting go, order and chaos. Hilde Overbergh's work has recently been the subject of solo exhibitions at Whitehouse Gallery (2024), Emergent Veurne (2024), Ballroom Gallery (2023) and De Garage (2022). Overbergh holds a Masters in Painting from Otis art Institute Los Angeles, and a Masters in Fine Arts from PXL Hasselt. She teaches painting at the SLAC in Leuven. Together with 3 other artists, she started SECONDroom Leuven, a platform that organizes exhibitions for and by artists between 2018 and 2022. Hilde Overbergh lives and works in Leuven, and is represented by Whitehouse Gallery.
